Luther noticed Pearl's confusion and explained, "She's a girl | took in ten years ago. She couldn't remember her

name, so | named her Nina and let her stay with me."

"Why have | never heard of her before?" Pearl asked, a hint of skepticism in her voice. "I didn't think you were

the caring type."

Luther gave a sad smile. "We had a big argument six years ago, and she went overseas to study because of it.

She hasn't calledsince then. I've just been sending her money every month; that's the only contact we

have."

"So, you think she took my son?"

Luther responded, "She never cback after she left, and | haven't heard anything about her returning. Plus,

Nina isn't the type to do something daring like taking Darius."

"You haven't seen her in years, you don't even know what she looks like now. But | don't care about your

relationship history. | just want to find my son."

Luther pulled out his phone and dialed a number he hadn't called in years. It rang twice and then disconnected.

Luther frowned in frustration. "She's not picking up."

Pearl snatched the phone and dialed again. It rang twice and cut off once more.

"I guess she hasn't forgiven me." Luther sighed.

Driven by anxiety, Pearl dialed one more time. This time, someone picked up.

"Why are you calling me?" a voice asked.

Pearl hesitated, surprised by the clear yet distant voice that also carried a note of excitement. She gestured to

Luther that the call was connected.

Taking the phone, Luther asked, "Can you tell us where you are right now?"

Nina laughed lightly. "How did you know I'm back?"

"Did you take the child?" Luther went straight to the point.

Nina's voice carried a hint of jealousy. "Aren't you glad I'm back? How could you ask if | took the child? That

hurts."

Pearl, sensing something was amiss, spoke up, "Something's fishy."

"Who are you talking to?" Nina's tone changed as she heard another voice.

"Your future sister-in-law," Luther replied, trying to keep the conversation light.

Pearl interjected nervously, "Don't..."

Nina's excitement cooled. "What do you mean?"

"There's no hidden meaning. Just tellwhere you took the child," Luther pressed.

Nina scoffed. "No."

Just then, a child's cry echoed in the background-Darius. Panic filled Pearl as she realized her fears were true.

"She took him!"
