Chapter 196

-Grayson'’s POV-

“Liam? What is... What is going on? Why are we here?” Elaine must have sensed the shift in him too because her

tone was filled with pure confusion.

But | didn’t say anything. | just kept staring at him, wondering when all of this had started. His features looked

exactly the same. The sas | had known since | was a child. Even with whatever act, whatever words he was

about to say that | knew would ruin whatever it was we might have built from the early stages of our lives... he

still looked the same.

“Liam?” Elsine called out again, and because | was watching her sluggish movements now, her hand reached to

her turnrny band. Liam caught the moment, making the smile turn into a look of pure irritation. “You are not

pregnant, Flaine, so why don’t you stop cradling a child that is not there?”

“What?” Her words were a slur, but the shock was evident.

He let out a sigh, like the very act of speaking to her was tiring. “Do you know just how much of a chore you are,

Elaine ? You were a spoiled, bratty child that got everything she wanted, and sizteen years later, nothing's

changed” He looked at me. “And you, you always have to have everything. Born into royalty, the whole world

was just handed to you, wasn't it?”

I let out a tired sigh, but I didn’t say anything, wishing he would get to the main point of how this all started,

because really, | was exhausted. | needed to sleep.

“Liam, | don’t know what is happening right now,” Elaine’s words cout with more force. “And what kind of

joke you two think you are playing, but it's not funny. It is not funny at all. It is getting really hot in here a-"

“Oh, will you just shut up? For the past six months, all you have done is talk and talk and talk. | don’t know how |

didn’t go mad from all of it.”

“So that’s when it started? Six months ago?” | asked finally,

Liam’s glare turned on me, and a smile filtered through. “Oh, finally you're interested? But the answer is no. It

started far longer than that. It started because the world had to revolve around the Blackwoods. There wasn’t

ever going to be room for the rest of us. You all sat in your mansions, while we, the commoners who would never

measure up, stood at the sidelines when we had all the potential to be better than you. | was better than you,

even your father knew it.”

“This is about jealousy? | was born with a silver spoon, and you were not? You've always hatedfrom the

start.”

“Oh no,” He shook his head, “I watched my parents slave away to serve your family, and | despised you all for it.

But then | met you, and you were different. You weren't like her,” he looked at Elaine, who was just staring at him

like she was in confusion and disbelief. “Not spoiled, entitled. You would cfrom your mansion to hang out

with us, the regular people, and with my parents never having tfor me, you becmore than a friend. You

becmy brother, because I've always wanted a brother. And in those years, things were good. But after that

fire, you changed. As the years progressed, you becworse than the entirety of them, and | becnothing

but a shadow to you, someone you tossed around and ordered like | was just another of your servants.”

I didn’t say anything, but I did want to hear the rest of it, and still, | wasn’t surprised because I, more than

anyone, knew just how much a person could change.

Maybe | was trying to justify whatever he had said and would say because | wanted to feel even more shitty than

| already

did.

“You were just using me?” Elaine’s voice broke from the corner, and Liam barely glanced at her. “It wasn't really

hard. Someone shows you even an ounce of attention or affection, and you grasp at it because you are so

starved for them both.”

That actually hit me. | was the reason she ended up like that. Not just because of that fire, but how I had treated

her in the years that passed.

“I knew | had to do something, but didn’t know what it was. And | know what you are thinking now, that | am

responsible for killing the Alphas and all the chaos that cwith it. I'm not, but it wasn’t until the person

behind it ctothat | realized that you would never see my potential. You would never treatas

anything more, so | had to take my fate into my own hands, and | started helping him hit at your cracks.”

| heard a sniffle and realized Elaine was crying, and as unfortunate as it was, for the first tin sixteen years, |

knew exactly what she was going through right now.

Her heart was breaking just like mine had two weeks ago, but then a realization cin, unlike the way my

world seemed to be slowing.

“You sent the message about my wolf to the reporter. You knew about my wolf, and every message that | found

that had madekick Ava out, you planted them.”

He smiled. “I guess when you becinvisible, it becomes so much easier for you to watch and know how to hit

the people who don’t see you where it would hurt the most.”

The sniffle cagain, louder, and he turned his attention back to Elaine, his tone mocking. “That won't do

anything for you, so why don’t you just save it? You might need the tear drops for what is coming.”

She looked up at him with so much pain in her eyes that | actually felt it. “You said you loved me.”

“You said you loved me.” The words echoed. The swords Ava had said to me, and | had seen in her eyes

how much | was breaking her because | thought she had betrayed me.

What have | done?

“No, | said what you wanted to hear, and | only got involved with you because you were key in the plans that had

formed. And that child that you are supposedly carrying, you know those papers | asked you to sign? They were

to state that the shares you have in Grayson’s company should be transferred to them once they are born.”

Elaine turned her head toslowly. “You gaveshares in your company?” Then she looked back at Liam as if

she was just grasping the situation and wanted to understand. “I took a test. | was pregnant. | don’t... | don’t

understand.”

He sighed. “Werewolves exist, and so does magic. With the right witch, any spell can be done, including making

a woman think she was pregnant.”

That's why there was no bump or anything. And that was why he used the opportunity ofdisappearing to

mate with her, knowing with how broken she was, she was easy to manipulate. Yes, | did give her shares because

she was my family, but I didn’t tell her about it because, well, she was Elaine, and Liam had made her believe in

a fake pregnancy, let the world believe a baby existed, so he could take her shares.

“Doesn't the baby have to be born for you to actually get the shares?” | asked drily.

He frowned, and | realized he hadn't thought that far when he chose this moment to reveal how much of a

backstabbing bastard he really was.

“I'll figure it out,” he growled at me, and | just stared at him blankly.

Then | realized something else. If he wasn’t the one behind the killings and all of this was centered around

shares, then he didn’t want to be Alpha King, he wanted my company. So Rickon and Ricardo were right.

Liam had been leading the people circling, and after | had cback after those two months and had focused on

Ava, | had

pushed the company further into his arms. So | asked the one thing | did want to know, since my brain seemed

to be piecing everything else out.

| looked at him with a little more interest in the situation, “Who is behind all of it? Who wants to be Alpha King?”
